Recent developments have changed many previous assumptions about the best options for management of pregnancy and childbirth, therefore FIGO aims to provide leadership and clarity for the application of the new (and relatively new) techniques and clinical options that are now available to clinicians for the successful management of the pregnant mother and her fetus/newborn. Although these issues apply universally, they are particularly important in industrialized and semi-industrialized countries, where they are already part of much clinical practice andwhere, therefore, authoritative guidance is urgently needed to establish best practice.
